Challenge:
The customer was nearing completion on a high-end custom home construction project in one of the Tubbs Fire burn neighborhoods and had purchased a commercial-grade, 8-burner stove that required a commercial-grade range-ventilation system. The customer had purchased a wood hood that matched the kitchen cabinetry and trim package. Neither the customer’s finish carpenter nor the framing contractor on the house could figure out how to install the combination ventilation system and range hood, and the customer needed the combo package installed to meet an upcoming inspection milestone toward achieving his occupancy permit.
Solution:
The customer contacted the source where he had purchased all the cabinets for the home including the kitchen package, seeking a referral to anyone that had exceptional experience with kitchen remodels and could work with commercial equipment, which led to subsequent contact with Sonoma County Carpentry (SCC). Upon looking at the job, SCC informed the customer that the hood opening in the ceiling for the vent-system ductwork was under-sized, so the first thing SCC did was to enlarge the hole in the ceiling to match the required 10-inch ducting for the vent (vs. 8 inch). And fortunately the customer had extra trim materials on hand when he decided against installing crown molding that he had purchased with the kitchen cabinets. There was another element of luck; the original wooden hood that was shipped to the job site was marginally damaged, and a replacement hood was sent to the home on warranty coverage, so there was an extra range hood sitting unused at the job site.
Results:
Sonoma County Carpentry was able to mount the heavy, commercial vent system to the wall after installing supporting 2x4s and related material to give the system structural strength. After which the damaged wooden hood was cut down to match up with the wooden hood that had not been damaged, and parts of the crown molding were custom cut to make the installation complete and look like it was manufactured according to spec by the cabinet-making company. The reality, however, is that the range hood and system is truly one-of-a-kind and highly customized. The entire system is also very beautiful. The customer passed the required inspection and received final CofO (Certificate of Occupancy) about a month later.
