Challenge:
In 2008, the SCC Customer purchased a single-story home in Sonoma County. The goal of the project was to improve the home’s entrance and modernize the kitchen. SCC began the project by removing all of the siding outside the home in the front of the house that was made of lap siding, and replacing it with Hardy siding before having a painting contractor paint the house. This set the stage for improving the home’s interior. The home’s foyer, or entryway, was closed in with a coat closet on one side and furnace closet on the other side. The kitchen was on the immediate behind the coat closet. The flooring was original linoleum, and cabinets were old and inefficient for a modern kitchen with capable cooks who like to entertain.
Solution:
Sonoma County Carpentry removed the closet to open up the kitchen and relocated the furnace so the customer still has a coat closet in the foyer. All the cabinets and original flooring were removed and new cabinets were installed throughout the kitchen. A new quartz island was also created in the center of the kitchen. A stainless steel hood and range backsplash were installed, for easy cleaning. Further, the customer likes the clean look of the stainless steel, which is complemented with walnut countertops and floating shelves. SCC framed the opening to the kitchen from the foyer, and the customer found a wooden piece of art that partially screens the kitchen from the entryway, but creates an open feeling (top left of this image).
The cabinets were carried into the living space to create a continuous flow. This image shows the continuous wall of cabinets from the kitchen into the living room, with the rooms connected by two steps to differentiate the space.
Results:
To complete the remodel, SCC installed all the new sheetrock in the entrance, kitchen, living and dining rooms. New sheetrock allowed for new texturing and fresh paint. Another significant upgrade to the home involved the flooring – all the original flooring was removed and Walnut-influenced Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) flooring was installed throughout the main living areas of the home.
“What I really appreciated about working with Russell is that he really listened. We spoke with other contractors before hiring Sonoma County Carpentry, they more or less told us what we should do. Russell spent the time needed to understand our vision. He helped my husband and I find ways to get the result we wanted in the best possible manner, and not the most expensive. We found his team to be very professional and kept the job site clean during the approximately three-month project. We love our new kitchen/living space. We could never have done it without Russell and his team! Thanks for making it real!”
